Imphal, September 04 2013:
Coming down heavily on the teachers who hire substitute teachers to take their place in their respective Government schools, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has asked these teachers to retire from the teaching profession in case they are unable to take their duties personally.
In a press conference held at its Keishampat office, DESAM general secretary Arambam Thoithoi said that two teachers of Khangabok Government Primary School were found hiring stand-in teachers to take their duties.
It was detected during an inspection drive conducted by the student's body at the school on August 30 last, Thoithoi said.
He said, although substitute teachers were taking classes, the signatures appended on the attendance register were found to be that of the regular teachers.
Thoithoi said that Moirangthem Binanda and Moirangthem Kumarjit were found taking classes in place of SSA teacher Moirangthem Sujenti and Primary teacher Thongam Dhaneshwar respectively.
Moirangthem Kumarjit is the secretary of the School Management and Development Committee.
Bijenti hired her younger brother Binanda on the ground that she is on maternity leave while Dhaneshwar appointed Kumarjit as he was on leave due to ill health.
He said that both the substitute teachers were hired at monthly remuneration of Rs 3000 per month.
Thoithoi said that even if the teachers are unable to discharge their duties due to ill health, they can always take leave instead of hiring substitute teachers.
He said that such irregularities are rampant in Government schools as the authority concerned has failed to check it.
Thoithoi requested Sujenti and Dhaneshwar to take retirement from their service if they would not be able to take future classes.
