Phumdi clearing halted

The ongoing phumdi clearing work undertaken by Loktak Development Authority (LDA) on Loktak lake has been halted by locals following the death of a villager after reportedly being hit by a Tata dumper truck engaged in clearing of phumdis yesterday around 7.30 am at Ithing-Sendra Mongpham Lampak.
According to a source, the deceased villager has been identified as one Khwairakpam Kullachandra (65) of Ithing Mamang Leikai.
Angry locals halted the phumdi clearing work under LDA after the incident, according to a statement issued by Pole Star Club, Ithing.
A six-member committee comprising members of Pole Star Club and Thanga Part-II GP has also been formed in connection with the incident.
Providing suitable Govt job to the next of kin of the deceased person and payment of adequate compensation are among other demands of the committee.
The statement said that the body of Kullachandra will not be claimed unless the Govt fulfils the demands.
