New Delhi, February 01 2014 :
Over a thousand Northeastern youths in Delhi today stated a demonstration in the National capital demanding unbiased speedy probe into the death of Nino Tainam (19), who succumbed to his injury on January 30 evening after he was beaten up by about eight people in the Lajpat Nagar-I A block locality.
The protest demonstration was held in the vicinity where the incident took place, and outside Lajpat Nagar police station, and went on till late afternoon.
Emotions and sentiments ran high as the NE youths shouted slogans and chant "do not judge me by my hair, my looks or my eyes, I am an Indian !!" .
Addressing the gathering near the Police station, Robin Hibu, Joint Commissioner of Police, who was in charge of NE cell and hails from Arunachal Pradesh assured, "Justice will be done.
We will ensure that this is fool proof case" .
He also asserted that a case under Sec 302 IPC has been registered along with Sec 3 of SC/ST atrocities Act.
He said "three persons have been arrested and are being interrogated" .
"The CBI has sent the Viscera report to the Forensic Laboratory and will take about a week for the result," the Joint Commissioner told the demonstrators.
Tainam, son of Arunachal Pradesh Congress MLA, was a student of BA first year in Lovely Professional University.
The protesters demanded that all the culprits be booked including the police who were on duty on the day and to take stringent exemplary action.
Later in the afternoon, the student leaders were charting out ways to seek the intervention of Delhi Chief Minister and other central Political leaders such as the Union Home Minister and the Prime Minister.
While no medical examination was conducted on the person ( Nino Tainam) when the Police pick him up from place of the incident where he was beaten and thrashed allegedly by iron rods, Police denied the allegations and argued that the deceased (Nino Tainam) was dropped back after a "compromise" in another location, but not the same locality where the incident took place.
Friends of Nino also alleged that an amount of about Rs 10,000 or so was paid by Nino to the Police for a compromise at the Police station when he was taken to the police station.
Once again the experiences of discrimination and assault in metro cities across India in various forms and levels were vented out by the youths.
The young demonstrators also reiterated that such incidents is not the first nor will not be the last and that there has not been a single case where Justice has been done.
Beside murder, it may be mentioned that every year cases of sexual assault against NE women were reported.
In November last year alone more than a 100 cases of non-payment of salaries and discrimination by employers were reported to the NE helpline.
