NE youth protest assault, urge BCI to initiate action

New Delhi, May 27 2014:
To demonstrate that assaults of NE people in Delhi would not be tolerated, hundreds of youth from the North East communities took to the office of Bar Council of India demanding immediate action against a lawyer who allegedly molested a young women from Nagaland when she returned home from work in the night of Thursday.
The demonstrators demanded immediate suspension of the accused lawyer and the group of lawyers involved in assaulting student leaders and the victim who went to record the statement in the premises of Tis Hazari Court before the Judges and the police.
Moreover, the youths anger were triggered when some of the NE student leaders who accompanied the young women to the Court were further assaulted by colleagues of the accused, in the court premises the next day.
The lawyers mob even hurt Rachubui Pamei, President of Zeliangrong Students Union, Delhi in the attack.
A women lawyer from Arunachal Liyi was also assaulted.
The incident reportedly took place inside a Court room at Tis Hazari Court, in the presence of the Judges and Police personnel.
Besides unfriendly law enforcers, the police, the manner in which such legal professionals acted is a grim situation for the NE communities and the larger public.
While the Bar Council has reportedly assured actions, it remains to be seen how far the law practitioners and the Judiciary system take the matter of the demand for justice.
