Imphal, July 25 2017:
The Ima Panthoibi Street Vendors Union has questioned the State Government about the whereabouts of the large sum of funds sanctioned by the North East Council to build a market shed solely for women at the Government area adjacent to the Apex Cooperative Society, ISBT .
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club yesterday, the advisor of the union, Y Indrani Devi said that union had been appealing to the authority concerned to build a market at the said area since 2011 .
The location is one of the important business hubs of the State, a place where people from the valley as well as the hills do all forms of business but women street vendors who sell vegetables and other perishable goods are often adversely affected due to the absence of a proper market shed .
In 2014, the North Eastern Council sanctioned some funds for the creation of a market shed and the union as well as the women vendors rejoiced at the news and the then Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and other officials also organised a meeting for the construction of the proposed keithel .
However, no concrete actions were taken up and the Union had to urge the new State Government to take up necessary work regarding the construction of the market, she added .
She further appealed to the State Government to review the proposal for construction of the market in the ongoing Assembly session and added that the women vendors and the union would highly appreciate positive response from the new State Government.
