Khongjom Battle commemorated

Thoubal, April 25 2019:
Khongjom Battle Memorial Committee (KBMC) in association with Justice Committee on Anglo Manipur War, 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak observed Khongjom Battle Commemoration function at Tengol Lampak near Khongjom Market, Thoubal district today.
The programme was attended by retd Professor, N Joykumar, retd Lt Col, M Ranjit, GD Art (Fine), MED, Laishram Phonindro and Chairman of the Justice Committee, H Ibotombi Khuman as a presidium members.
As part of the programme, dignitaries and public paid tarpan tributes to the heroes of battle of Khongjom who sacrificed their life for motherland at Khongjom river.

Later, people paid floral tribute to the statues of Major Chongtha Miya and other unknown freedom fighters.
The gathering also observed a two minute silence as a mark of respect to all the freedom fighters who were slain at the battle in 1891.Speaking at the event, KBMC's secretary Chingtam Luwang claimed that Tengol Lampak is the original place where Khongjom war took place.
The committee has been observing the day since 1994 at the site on April 25 every year.
Saying that the public are perplexed about the true date of the of battle of Khongjom with some claiming it happened on April 23, 1891 and others claiming it took place on April 25, Chingtam Luwang added that the committee is still continuing its research to find the exact date of battle of Khongjom.
Beside Khongjom, battles were also fought at Mayangkhang in Senapati, Machin Manao Ching in Kakching and Laimaton Ching among others, he added.
Meanwhile, the 3 days observance of the 49th Khongjom Battle Commemoration which started on April 23 concluded today.
The observance was organised by Leimayol Arts Centre (LAC), Singjamei.
S Tomba Meetei, president LAC, Hijam Raghu, Theatre activist and womenfolk of Apunba Meira Paibi Nupi Lup, Chingamakha attended the event among others.
A play titled "Khongjom Lan" written by Thoudam Nodiya and directed by Oinam Sharmila was showcased as a part of the commemoration.
