A meeting of Citizens Committee, Manipur (CCM) has resolved to send a representation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to treat the Myanmar citizens taking refuge in the State humanely.
A press release issued by CCM informed that the meeting held today at Thangmeiband under the chairmanship of Radhabinod Koijam, former Chief Minister of Manipur also resolved to open a Facebook page for CCM and use the bank account of Human Rights Alert, Imphal for the time being, to receive financial contributions.
Saying that the meeting deliberated on "The present Crisis in Myanmar: Possible Humanitarian Response from Manipur", the committee continued that the participants shared the hardship of people facing persecution in the neighbouring country.
The participants also recalled the long historical, demographic and cultural links between the people of Manipur and Myanmar, it added.
Informing that the meeting also agreed to constitute a Humanitarian Sub-Committee with Prof Amar Yumnam as the Chairperson for initiating humanitarian measures, the committee appealed to the people to extend, in cash or kind, assistance to the Myanmar citizens taking refuge in the border villages of Manipur.
The chairperson of CCM, Radhabinod Koijam has contributed Rs 50,000 to kick-start the initiative, CCM continued.
