Imphal/New Delhi, February 11 2014:
A day after two Manipuri boys were attacked while another was robbed in different parts of south Delhi, a 24-year-old boy, also from Manipur, was brutally attacked in the national capital early morning today.
According to report, the youngster was returning from work at around 3 am when he was stabbed in the stomach in South Delhi's Saket area.
He was also robbed of his mobile phone.
The youth, whose cell phone was first snatched by the assailants, was attacked after he tried to resist the robbery bid.
The victim rushed to the nearby Saket Hospital for treatment.
The victim had one centimetre deep cut in his abdomen.
The doctors conducted a surgery on the victim and he is now said to be out of danger.
Police have registered a case at Mehrauli police station and are investigating the case further.
Back home, various pockets of Imphal today witnessed protests against 'racial attacks' on people from Northeast region.
Led by volunteers of All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), a large number of college students including that of GP Women's College, members of women organisations, human rights activists and members of state unit Aam Adami Party (AAP) attempted to storm the Raj Bhavan here demanding justice for Nido Taniam as well as for other victims of the recent series of assaults, including rape of people from Northeast in Delhi.
Earlier, protesters staged sit-in demonstrations at various parts of the city like GP Women's College campus, Uripok, etc.
They later marched towards the Raj Bhavan to storm it, but the police stopped them midway near Keishampat junction.
However, the police allowed four protesters to submit a memorandum to the Governor through his Secretary RK Nimai.
Governor VK Duggal was reported to be out of station when the protest took place.
The memorandum submitted to the Governor laid down six different demands including justice for Nido Tania, the recent assaults and rape of Manipuris in Delhi, stringent steps to stop the ongoing alleged racial attack in the national capital, effective steps to stop racial profiling and discrimination against students and persons from NE.
Enactment of a realistic and pragmatic anti-racial discrimination law in fulfilment of India's obligations under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) ratified since 1968 is also one of the demands highlighted in the memorandum.
On the other hand, state BJP unit organised a separate protest demonstration at its office here to register protest against the racial attacks on North East people in the national capital.
The latest attack on people of Northeast origin in the National Capital has come close behind the heels of two Manipuri youths beaten up by a group of motorcyclists in Ambedkar Nagar area of South Delhi and another 20-year old Manipuri student robbed by four men near Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah, Delhi when he went to buy a recharge coupon for his mobile phone on Sunday.
Two juveniles were detained on Monday for their involvement in the first case of assault while all the culprits in the second case of robbing were later arrested by the police based on the description given by the victim.
The first incident was provoked following an argument when the motor bikers allegedly called the two Manipuri youths who were passing by "chinki" and "Nepali" .
Earlier, on February 7 night, a 14-year-old minor girl from Manipur was forcibly grabbed by her landlord's son, taken to a vacant room and brutally raped, triggering widespread protests.
The rape of the teenaged Manipuri girl took place in Murnika area of south Delhi, which also witnessed last week an altercation over the appearance of a student from Arunachal Pradesh.
On January 29, a student from Arunachal Pradesh Nido Tania had an altercation with some shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar market over his appearance.
Nido was beaten up and he died at the hospital on January 30 .
His postmortem revealed that he died due to injuries to his head and face.
Five days prior to this gruesome incident, two young women from Manipur were mercilessly beaten in full public view by some local goons at Kotla Mubarrakpur area of South Delhi.
