World Environment Day observed

Safe Environment Campaign Committee
(SECC), Heingang organised awareness campaign through
pamphlets and signboards to commemorate World Environment
Day at Heingang Reserve Forest and adjoining areas yesterday.
Members of the Committee distributed pamphlets to the general
public living in and around Heingang hills besides putting up
signboards.
It may be m
entioned that the Committee in associa-
tion with State Forest Department has been trying to make the
people of the area aware of the importance of saving the reserve
forest from unabated deforestation, forest fire and hunting of
wildlife, conveyed a press release issued by the
chairman of
SECC.
National Association of Fishermen, Manipur State Unit
(NAFMSU) also organised World Environment Day yes-
terday at Loktak Lake.
During the event, a discussion
programme was held on the need to conserve Loktak Lake,
which is the largest fresh water lake in Northeast India.
Nambul river, the most polluted river in Manipur ends
up in this lake after depositing whatever possible pollutant
it brings in its course and NAFMSU has drawn the atten-
tion of Manipur State Pollution Control Board to check it.
It has also urged the State Government to set up
Manipur State River Board and work towards preventing
polluted water from flowing into the Loktak Lake.
North East Border Area Development Organisation
(NEBADO), Manipur and Christian Youth Society of
Nambashi Khullen Baptist Church jointly organised a Na-
tional Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) yesterday
on World Environment Day at Nambashi Khullen, Ukhrul
district under the sponsorship of Directorate of Environment,
Government of Manipur under MoEF & CC .
