Imphal, May 31 2019:
Locals of a village were granted their wish for availability of drinking water facilities, when an appeal they had made to the State Government during one of the Go to Village session for constructing a water tank at the village was noticed by the authority concerned which set out to create, not one, but two ponds for the locals.
On December 17, Senapati DC Somorjit Salam, along with many officials, went on foot for about 10 kilometres to organise a Go to Village session at Chakha village, which is located at the border with Nagaland, around 180 km away from Senapati DHQ.
The trip was the only second ever such trip by any Government official to the village (populated only by Liangmai community) in 34 years and the first ever such trip aimed at assessing the needs and wants of the villagers.
Chakha village is a place which is inaccessible by vehicle throughout the year, except during winter season.
During the interaction, the villagers appealed to the authority to construct a water tank for providing fresh drinking water for the locals and back then, the DC assured to do everything possible to address their grievance.
According to a source from the District Administration, after careful deliberation among the officials and the DC regarding the construction of the water tank, it was reasoned that the water tank would not be feasible as well as durable due to its (village) terrain.
As such, it was finally decided to instead construct two ponds lined with a special material and hand over to the people, the source added.
The two 22 feet long, 12 feet wide and 4 feet deep ponds, which can hold 29,749 litres of water each, were constructed by DRDA under MGNREGS and the water for the ponds were carried by a two kilometre long water pipe.
On the other hand, DC Somorjit Salam conveyed that he has finally been able to grant the wish of the people of Chakha village aired during the Go to Village session.
It may be mentioned that it took just five months, after the DCs visit to the village, to construct and hand over the ponds to the locals.
