NSUC echoes student bodies' demands

Imphal, August 28 2020: Naga Students' Union Chandel (NSUC), has stated that the body will support any movement/protest initiated by 3 apex student bodies (ATSUM, ANSAM and KSO GHQ) in connection with the charter of demands to develop the education sector in hill areas.

NSUC, in a statement, said that the body has taken note of the statement of the 3 apex student bodies issued on August 16, which mention that the State Government has failed miserably to fulfil the charter of demands submitted as was assured by the Chief Minister on August 13 last year.

The student bodies have been demanding reformation of the education sector in hill areas by recruitment, regularization, utilization of teachers to deal with the shortage of staff and teachers for secondary and higher education facilities.

Questioning the State Government's indifferent attitude and delay tactics in addressing the genuine demands of the student bodies, the body said that it doubted Government's sincerity while terming the assurances as mere lip service to fool the tribals.

It is disheartening that the State Government is least bothered about the difficulties faced by the hills, it said while adding that regularization of 2006 contract basis teachers was assured last year but there has not been any fruitful result.

Quality education in the hills could not be maintained in the hills due to shortage of staff and teachers, it said while further asserting that it will support any movement launched by the apex bodies in the event the State Government fails to comply with the demands (within August 31) .

In the meantime, NSUC congratulated Robert Shetkintong Lamkang, son of Dilbung Samuel Shetwor and Leivon Angela Shanting of Keithelmanbi village, Chandel, on being appointed as India's Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Ethiopia.

Robert Shetkintong Lamkang obtained an M Phil degree in Political Science from JNU, New Delhi before joining Indian Foreign Service in 2001, NSUC said.

It further said that he has served in Indian Missions at Israel, Italy, Slovenia and Tanzania earlier and is serving as Joint Secretary (Parliament and Coordination) in the Ministry of External Affairs.

While extending best wishes to the first Chandel native to become an IFS officer and an Ambassador, NSUC also expressed immense gratitude to the Government of India for recognising Robert Shetkintong Lamkang's service by honouring him with such a prestigious post.
