Kangpokpi, August 28 2018:
Md Rohit alias Rajesh (29), the main accused in rape and murder of 26-year-old Kumari Pukhrihongbam Memi Chanu of Ekou Bazar was produced at JMIC Kangpokpi amidst hundreds of enraged mob at around 2.50 pm today.
The enraged mob mostly women including JAC Against Brutal Killing of Kumari Pukhrihongbam Memi Chanu of Ekou Bazar stormed into the JMIC campus as the accused was brought to be produced at the Court.
Confrontation ensued when the agitating mob attempted to forcibly enter the campus of the JMIC.
The police-mob confrontation lasted for almost two and half hours before Kangpokpi SP came and intervene to disperse the mob at around 5.10 pm.
The police fired several rounds of bullets and tear-gas to disperse the mob who turned violent pelting stones to the police personnel stationed there.
There has been report of injuries on both sides.
The exact numbers of injured persons are not known at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the police have alleged that some agitating men allegedly attempted to stab the Addl SP Kangpokpi with a knife.
On the other hand, the JAC Against the Brutal Killing of Kumari Pukhrihongbam Memi Chanu of Ekou Bazar alleged harassment and torture on the part of the police personnel and expressed strong resentment over the alleged police high-handedness towards "peaceful" agitating mob.
While speaking to media persons, Kh Darmendra Meetei, convenor of the JAC demanded that the Government should give befitting punishment to the "murderer" .
"When will the State Government take a satisfactory and strong action against such criminal after so many incidents of crime against women had already happened under their nose? If such crime happens to them (legislators), what would they do?" asked Kh Darmendra.
Meanwhile, the JMIC Kangpokpi has remanded the accused into police custody till September 1 .
It may be recalled that Memi Chanu's lifeless body was recovered in a gunny bag from Iril River on August 17 after she went missing on August 14 .
The accused Md Rohit alias Rajesh (29) son of (L) Md Riyajuddin of Khergao Makha Leikai, Imphal East was charged with murder and was arrested on August 20 by a combined team of Imphal East and Kangpokpi Police.
He was earlier produced before the JMIC Kangpokpi on August 21 and remanded till today.
The JAC had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister on August 21 demanding death penalty and appropriate actions within 48 hours.
The JAC had demanded that the chargesheet be filed against the culprit within five days and the trial of the accused starts within one month while maintaining that the Government should provide all possible assistances to the family of the victim.
The JAC today warned that it will launch intense agitations if their demands are not met.
