Organisations across the State continue to denounce the Government's decision to partially lift the prohibition on alcohol.
In this regard, Thoubal District United Women's Development Organization (Thoubal Ima) has questioned the Government whether legalising alcohol and consuming high quality liquor will resolve the issues of domestic violence and crimes against women and children caused and aggravated by abuse of alcohol.
The statement was made by Sapam Bimola, president, Thoubal District United Women's Development Organization during a press conference held at the office of Thoubal Ima today.
Stating that alcohol abuse has claimed the lives of many people, she expressed the organisation's firm stand against alcohol legalisation.
Meisnam Malemnganbi, Organisation Secretary, Thoubal District United Women's Development Organization also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the women's movement against alcohol abuse spanning many decades.
She added that only foreigners and wealthy people will consume high quality liquor, the rest who cannot afford such luxuries will drink the regular liquor available.
She also questioned if the Government had informed the public of good quality liquor and spread awareness in this connection.
Separately, Ningol Club, Heirok has also strongly opposed the State Government's decision to legalize alcohol.
In a statement issued by Linthoi Laishram, secretary general, Ningol Club, Heirok, the organisation said that the State Government's War on Drugs campaign holds no meaning when the Government has partially lifted the ban on alcohol.
Ningol Club, Heirok has called against the legalisation of any type of illicit substances, reasoning that in order to save the people from succumbing to such vices, all such substances must be banned.
Citing the increasing instance of abuse of alcohol in the State, Ningol Club, Heirok stated that the Government's decision will prove to be detrimental to society.
As such, Ningol Club, Heirok has appealed to Manipur Government to revoke the decision for partial lifting of alcohol ban.
