Thoubal, July 27 2017:
Youth Association Leishangthem has urged the State Government to take up necessary steps to ease the hardships and suffering of the people of Thoubal Leishangthem Khong Manung area who have been taking refuge in relief camps and other shelters for around one month due to the flood which ravaged the State .
Speaking to media persons, the association’s secretary, L Prem Kumar said that even till now, the State Government has not done anything for the flood affected people although it has been almost a month since the people of the area have been taking shelter in the relief camps .
He said that the locals have been displaced from their homes and residence since July 3 due to the flood .
“Several acres of farmlands and fish farms were also lost thus destroying the entire livelihood of the farmers as well as the people”, he added.
Prem Kumar stated that 300 shelters had been initially established for around 530 people but some have returned back to their homes after the water receded from some parts of the area.
Around 100 people are still taking refuge at the relief camps and they are fearing possible outbreak of water borne diseases, he added.
Expressing disappointment, Prem Kumar alleged that the State Government has organised only a single health camp, provided rice and relief materials just once and the PHE Department just visited the flood affected area once and no concrete action has been taken up since .
He said that all most all the commodities and materials for the people in the relief camps have been provided by private organisations, CSOs and local leaders.
Expressing gratitude to all those who provided help and support for welfare of the flood affected people, Prem Kumar urged the State Government to take up necessary measures and steps for the people at the earliest.
