Anti-obesity day observed

The seventh World Anti-Obesity Day was observed today at Kuki Inn here under the aegis of Herbal Life.
The function was graced by MLA Dr Ng Bijoy as chief guest, Herbal Life International senior member Kishore Lourembam as president, Imphal East retired CMO Dr Ksh Manglem, Wushu Association of India Technical Chairman M Birmani as guests of honour.
The World Anti-Obesity Day was observed to spread awareness about the growing health risks associated with obesity.
Obesity may be caused by heredity, food habits, living styles, alcoholism, etc.
Obesity is often associated with such symptoms as dullness, lethargy, pain in joints, insomnia, development of stones in gall bladder, irregularity in menstrual cycle, inconceivability, functional problems in sexual organs, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, angina pectoris, cancer, diabetes, metabolic syndromes etc.
It is reported that 1.8 billion people across the world are suffering from obesity.
This figure expected to grow up to 2.16 billion in 2030.Out of the total population of India, five per cent are obese.
In Manipur, 13.4 per cent of the female population are obese as 17.1 per cent of the male population are suffering from obesity.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Ng Bijoy said that obesity has become a serious health issue and it can breed many more health problems.
Dr Ksh Manglem said that most doctors in Manipur are little concerned with obesity and they seldom advise their patients against obesity.
To reduce body weight and keep the body weight under control, one must eat at least seven varieties of fruits in a day, he said.
