Awareness on illicit poppy cultivation held at Churachandpur

The adverse impact of poppy cultivation in all aspects, the ways and means to put a complete halt on it and importantly the need to provide alternatives to illicit poppy cultivation was deliberated by speakers during an 'awareness campaign against illicit poppy cultivation' organised by Churachandpur district administration and district police at DTC Hall, Tuibong, Churachandpur.
Delivering his inaugural speech LM Khaute, DGP Manipur asserted that one of the pressing issues besieging the State is drug menace and called upon all concerned stakeholders to join hands in putting a complete halt on poppy cultivation.

Pointing out that widespread poppy cultivation has been recorded in more than ten areas in the interior of Churachandpur district, the State police have been destroying illegal poppy cultivation since the last few years at this time of the year.
However, the cultivation goes on due to lack of awareness.
As such, the Govt has deemed it fit to start organising such mass awareness campaign from Churachandpur, he said.
Appealing leaders of Students' Unions, CSOs and village authorities to join hands in the fight against drug menace particularly illicit poppy cultivation, the DGP said all efforts may go in vain unless joint and concerted efforts are made by all stakeholders.
He said that the future generations should not be put at stake due to illicit poppy cultivation.
Delivering welcome address, Kabib K, DIG Range-III said that the main problem besieging the district after SoO agreement came into force is drug and the problem of 'bullet replaced by tablet' .
Heroin is now more problematic than gun powder.
The grave of happiness is dug by poppy plantation, he said.
"If we want our children to be happy tomorrow, we have to get rid of poppy today," he said.
W Basu, SP, NAB made a power point presentation on illicit poppy cultivation.
He dwelt on the legal aspect of the poppy plantation.
Later, Lunseh Kipgen, IGP Zone II chaired the interactive session which was marked by lively interaction from the audiences.
