Human rights activist passes away

Noted human rights activist and founding
member of Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights
(NPMHR), Ahu Sakhrie passed away today in Kohima.
He
worked selflessly not only for the Nagas but also for the Northeast
people against the human rights violation.
Ahu Sakhrie was very vocal against the imposition of the
Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
According to
the NSCN-IM, Ahu Sakhrie was the first person to file pe-
tition in the Supreme Court of India against the AFSPA.
Ahu,
a native of Khonoma village was one of the visionary leaders
amongst Nagas.
Meanwhile, in its condolence message, the NPMHR said
that Ahu Sakhrie believed in protecting universal human dig-
nity, rights and values.
"In the Naga struggle for self
determination, defending the right to life and free speech and
movement was the endeavour of the founding members, and
Ahu was one among them who with his powerful oratory
skills and dedication was a strong propagator of the Naga
cause," the NPMHR stated, adding, "His participation in
various human rights rallies, workshops and seminars high-
lighting atrocities committed by the Indian Army will be
highly regarded and always remembered.
His immense con-
tribution during the most difficult times in the life of the Naga
people will be forever etched in the history of the Naga
movement for sovereignty."
The Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR)
then expressed its "pain and shock" to learn of the sudden
demise of Ahu Sakhrie.
He was one of the founding members
and 2nd Convenor of the NPMHR.
According to the rights
body, Ahu was a brilliant human rights member actively in-
volved in and committed towards upliftment of the Nagas all
throughout his life.
Meanwhile, the NSCN-IM said that Ahu Sakhrie, a native
of Khonoma village was one of the visionary leaders amongst
Nagas.
"True to his enthusiasm, he was truthful and committed
social worker.
A down to earth person and well respected by
the people, he had actively involved in numerous ways in
uplifting the society.
He was one among those dedicated who
contributed with sincerity and courage in all his duty for social
activities.
Late Ahu Sakhrie was not only the founding mem-
ber of NPMHR but also the convener (Delhi Sector) for many
years.
When the Nagas were in the most difficult time and at
the darkest period of human rights violation marked by tor-
tures and killings, he was the first person to file the petition
in the Supreme Court of India against the imposition of Armed
Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and demanded for the
withdrawal of the draconian law.
He worked selflessly for the
Nagas in particular and the Northeast people in general against
the human rights violation," the NSCN-IM condolence mes-
sage said.
It then stated that Ahu Sakhrie was actively involved
in NPMHR till he took his last breath.
The NSCN-IM onveyed its "deepest condolence" to the bereaved families and prays that Almighty God bless con-
solations in time of their
mourning.
