Imphal, October 22 2013:
The All Loktak Lake Area Fishermen's Union, Manipur (ALLAFUM) extends warm welcome to the auspicious visit of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) who have come to discuss some issues of the state like the controversial Loktak Lake which is in grave danger of destruction and rendering cut off of the source of livelihood of fishermen depending on the lake.
The lake is the only "fresh water floating lake" in the North East, India and a designated 'Wetland of International Importance' under the Ramsar Convention on March 23, 1990 .
The ALLAFUM invites the NHRC team to conduct a fact finding into the Loktak Lake issue to find out the depth of torture fishermen at the lake are going through with a load of human rights violation.
The union also expresses high expections from the NHRC team who will uphold the law to provide justice to the innocents.
The union also appeals all the Loktak Lake Areas Fishermen to be present at the reception of the NHRC team's visit to the Loktak Lake on October 23, 2013 .
