Imphal, September 22 2016:
While the process of drafting a new Bill for protection of indigenous peoples of Manipur is nearing completion, the Government has started examining the demand for enlistment of Meitei/Meetei in the ST category.
A Cabinet meeting held yesterday with Chief Minister O Ibobi in the chair informally discussed about the progress of drafting the new Bill.
It is reported that the Government has been considering to table the Bill in the next Assembly session which is likely to be held next month.
The Government has also been considering whether the Bill should be made accessible to the general public before it is tabled in the State Assembly.
Reports say that the Government has deputed one Cabinet Minister and a retired IAS officer to talk with different groups/civil society organisations regarding the ILPS issue.
The Cabinet meeting also discussed informally about the demand for enlistment of Meitei/Meetei in the ST category but no concrete decision was adopted, said reports further.
