Lifer for murder convict

In yet another landmark judgement, Session Judge Imphal West, Maibam Manojkumar, sentenced a 43 year old murder convict Thiyam Kanta (of Khabi Maning Mayai Leikai) to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000, today.
The sentence was announced after the sentence hearing of the case was held against Thiyam Kanta, who was convicted by the Court yesterday, some 14 years after the occurrence of the murder on January 14, 2004 .
The convict, Thiyam Kanta (43) s/o Th Yumjao, was produced before the Court from the judicial custody of Sajiwa Central Jail for the sentence hearing of the murder case.
The Court heard the submission of the APP of the State, A Nilachandra and the counsel of the convict, N Bhogendrajit Singh.
The APP submitted that the convict committed the murder of one Oinam Kora Singh by hacking his head, and prayed for awarding life imprisonment along with a fine while the defense counsel contended that the incident happened on January 13 (2004) and the convict has been in judicial custody for a period of more than 14 years and he also does not have any previous criminal records.
The defense counsel also prayed for awarding the period the convict has already undergone inside considering the age of the convict as well as reformation made by the convict while in judicial custody.
The Court carefully went through all the materials on record and and the submission of both sides and sentenced the convict to rigorous life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 .
