Imphal, January 15 2013:
Taking serious concern over increasing number of vehicles, the State government has decided to phase out old vehicles that produce more Carbon dioxide, Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro has disclosed.
Speaking as Chief Guest of the 'Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight-2013' organized by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOC Ltd.), Imphal Division at Hotel Imphal here on Tuesday, Minister Okendro said that the number of vehicles in Manipur has increased many fold over the past few years.
According to record, the total number of registered vehicles in the state is 2.5 Lakh, which is disproportionate to the present population of Manipur.
So in order to control emission of pollutants from old vehicles and preserve petroleum products concerned departments are working on to phase out old vehicles.
Encouraging all to use public transports, the Minister urged the oil dealers who were present on the occasion to initiate a mass campaign for school students with the objectives of conserving petroleum fuels.
Additional Chief Secretary (CAF & PD), A Luikham, who attended the function as Guest of Honour, said that as government is spending huge amount of money to import oil from other countries we need to conserve petroleum fuels.
Citing Tripura as a North East state where nature has been successfully harnessed as a source of energy, Luikham said that petroleum and its products are exhaustible and more we use it, more we produce Carbon dioxide.
So, for judicious use of oil and gas reserves, we need to follow the same path of conserving energy that has been adopted by Tripura.
As part of the observation, IOC Ltd Imphal division also organized painting and quiz competitions for school students.
