Shillong, October 14 2011:
The Meghalaya government kick started its initiative to introduce work permits to outside labourers and immigrants by issuing a notification that asked the Deputy Commissioners of the seven districts in the state to start the process of enumeration.
The notification was issued by the department of home on Thursday, where the deputy commissioners have been asked to assign a district magistrate, a labour inspector and other ministerial staffs to start the exercise.
Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma told newsmen today that the exercise is in compliance to the promises made to the NGOs who have persistent in demanding from the consecutive governments to address the issue of Influx in the state.
" This is an exercise that will facilitate the creation of the committed anti infiltration directorate in the state", the chief minister said.
Admitting that the issue of influx is serious in Meghalaya, Mukul Sangma said, 'Sometimes I feel out of place when I visit certain areas of the state".
Notwithstanding his feeling of a stranger in some parts of the state, the chief minister said that it was a tough decision to formally initiate the process of introduction of the work permit system.
"It is not easy because various other departments have to be brought into the loop to make the conceptual plans materialised", further elaborated Mukul Sangma , adding, "The entire exercise to curtail the problems of influx will be completed in a time bound manner" .
The government's initial exercise is expected to get the backing of the NGOs who have been demanding the introduction of the work permit in the state.
