Consignment of 10 metric tonnes of turmeric flagged off

Horticulture and Soil Conservation Minister Letpao Haokip appealed to all not to support extensive use of chemicals for exploitation of forests for poppy plantation since it has an adverse impact on ecology.
He made the above appeal while flagging off a consignment of 10 metric tonnes of turmeric produced from Kangpokpi and Noney districts for export from the outlet of Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA) located at Sanjenthong today.
Addressing the media persons on the sidelines of the programme, the Minister expressed concern that the rampant use of chemicals for poppy plantation in the hilly areas has led to the destruction of plants which has led to many environmental issues like frequent mud slides.
It is high time that concerted efforts are made to check such practices at the earliest in the interest of all, he added.
He further assured to extend best possible help to the poppy cultivators if they sincerely wish to resort to other activities and stop such illegal and harmful activities.
The Minister also informed that the consignment of 10 metric tonnes of turmeric which have been flagged off today were produced with the support of MOMA under the aegis of Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER)-Phase 3 .
Stating that the Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department and MOMA have been supporting the organic farmers of the State and appealed to all to support in making Manipur an 'Organic State' .
