Imphal, June 10:
Excessive expenditures associated in obtaining passports from the Regional Passport Office, Guwahati could be reduced to a significant level as hectic effort is on to establish such facility in the State.
According to a reliable source, the Government is committed to setting up a passport office attached to the Home Dept under the aegis of the Guwahati Regional Office.
The passport cell in the Home department would be established at the earliest as the Regional Passport Officer Armstrong Changson had already held talks with State Government officials on the matter, the source conveyed.
The facility would most probably be opened at the Secretariate block of the Home Department, said the source and added that upon receiving application from interested individuals and verification of the travellers by the Superintendent of Police of CID (SB) the documents would be referred to the Regional Office for the final approval.
It is pertinent to mention here that till date people of Manipur have to approach the Guwahati office from the initial stage itself thereby resulting in the travellers having to endure additional expenditures on travelling and lodging/fooding at the Assam State capital.
