Manipur Students' Federation under its mission "Sanghallasi" has planted more than 1,000 saplings at Koubru mountain.
Members of the MSF Team who undertook the 'Mission Mt Koubru Afforestation' were felicitated at its office in Kwakeithel Monday.
Speaking on the sideline of the event, MSF president Ngariyanbam Milan said that the team planted more than 1,000 saplings at Koubru mountain under its campaign 'Sanghallasi Koubru Chingdol' on May 4 and 5.25 volunteers took part in the campaign which was aimed at mitigating climate change, said Milan who led the team.
Global warming is a threat that needs to be addressed in time with mass participation, he said pointing out the adverse effects of deforestation and other environmental degrading activities.
Urging all to be conscious about the changing environment/climate, he called for mass plantation of trees and rehabilitation of the forests.
India has just 28 trees per person while Canada has 8,953 trees per person, according to the United Nations report, he said.
Recent frequent flood and drought like situations in Manipur are results of climate change, he said appealing Government and departments concerned to take strict action against illegal deforestation, forest fire and other activities which lead to climate change.
Deforestation and exploitation of nature in the name of development projects must be stopped, he said citing Loktak Hydro-electric project, Tipaimuk and Mapithel Dam projects which affect the environment and displaced thousands of people.
He identified Loktak Hydro-electric project as one main reason for decline and degradation of the Loktak lake.
Appealing the Government to declare Koubru a heritage site in order to preserve and protect it, Milan urged all to contribute and plant trees for future.
