Expired tobacco products worth Rs 2 lakh seized

Expired tobacco products worth Rs 2 lakh were seized yesterday by a combined team of Narcotic Cell and Food Safety Officers from one non-local man.
Jay Ram Prasad (37), s/o Gulab Chand Prasad of Hetampur, Bhojpur district, Bihar who was presently residing at a rented room located at Ragailong, Khuman Lampak Road, Imphal East was caught along with varieties of expired tobacco products during the drive conducted at around 7.30 pm yesterday.
Officials said seized products include 212 packets of tobacco 1221 (50 gms), 87 packets of Baba 120 (50 gms), 630 packets of Signal 350, 3487 packets of Sriram 999, 198 packets of Baba 120 (10 gms), 37 cans of Baba 120 (50 gms), 820 cans of Signal tobacco 350, 280 cans of Baba Black and 300 small cans of Signal tobacco.
All the expired products are reportedly worth Rs 2 lakh in the market.
Dr Sarungbam Bimolakumari, consultant Food Safety, Directorate of Health Services said, "We got information that Jay Ram Prasad has been selling adulterated tobacco products in many localities.
All the seized products will be tested in the laboratory and based on that a report will be submitted.
After all the procedure is completed, stem action will be taken up against Jay Ram Prasad under Food Safety Standard Act " .
She also informed that the seized items will be destroyed after obtaining permission from the Pollution Control Board.
