Workshop on sericulture held

Under the sponsorship of the State Sericulture Department, National Alliance for Elder People Livelihood Research Advocacy and Chronic Diseases of India (NAEPLRACDI) organised a two-day State level workshop on the role of women's sericulture activities in Manipur at Youth Hostel, Khuman Lampak yesterday.
YAS and Tourism Parliamentary Secretary M Prithviraj, former Chairperson of Manipur State Welfare Board and Chief Editor of North East Elderly Women, RK Nayansana, Central Silk Board Joint Director and Scientist-D Dr K Chaoba, Social Welfare Deputy Director Surrender A Shishak, Thoubal District Programme Officer of Social Welfare Department, Nahakpam Satyavama and Vice Chairperson and Scientific Chief Patron of NAEPLRACDI, Dr K Shantibala attended the programme.
M Prithviraj while speaking at the occasion said that it is a great loss to Manipur that the people of the State are unable to continue handloom practices effectively.
Although, Manipur is rich in resources, small and medium scale industries are not in a condition to run properly due to disturbances from certain organisations, he added.
Surrender A Shishak said that a vast number of Manipuri women are bearing the impact of weak economy.
Observing that the products of agro-based industries must be maintained properly, the Deputy Director said that the people of Manipur must try to tap maximum benefits from the schemes and policies funded by the Central Government.
RK Nayansana said that Manipuri women adapt well with the profession of sericulture.
As such, Manipuri women could be empowered economically through sericulture, she observed.
Dr K Chaoba said that Japanese Government is committed to restart sericulture projects in Manipur and the State Government is ready to take up various programmes of sericulture.
However, people's sincerity and maintaining work culture are must to make the projects succesful.
