UCM president underscores importance of safeguarding ancestral customs and traditions

United Committee Manipur president Konthoujam Joychandra has highlighted the importance of preserving the identity, customs and traditions of the indigenous communities.
He was speaking at the evening session of the Berkap Leh Reiju festival held yesterday at Ichum Keirap Kom village, Kangpokpi.
Addressing the gathering, he advised against any action that could hurt the Kom identity while adding that the scattering of the Kom tribal community has acted against strengthening it.
He emphasized on the importance of safeguarding the culture and traditions of ancestors and asserted that the culture of a community acts as its identifier to the rest world.
Espousing egalitarian values, the UCM president further stated that UCM believes in the equality of all communities, big or small and called against efforts to forcefully assimilate smaller communities.
Konthoujam Joychandra also pointed out the close relations between the Meitei and Kom community maintaining that both are indigenous people of this State and hence share bonds of brotherhood.
