Need for prioritising mental health underscored

The Second Annual Conference of 'Society of Psychiatric Nurses Manipur', (SPNMCON), 2023 was held today (3rd March, 2023) at Jubilee Hall, RIMS, Imphal.
The conference was organized by SPNM in association with the Department of Psychiatry, RIMS and Share and Care Foundation, Wangkhei.
Professor N Rajmuhon Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Dhanamanjuri University; Kh Ratna Devi , Society of Psychiatric Nurses Manipur president; Dr Arunjyoti Baruah, Head of Department, Nursing, LGBRIMH, Tezpur; Professor H Priyosakhi Devi, RIMS Director; Dr N Hemantakumar Singh, Additional Director/Consultant Neurologist, Manipur Health Services and Dr RK Lenin Singh, Professor Department of Psychiatry, RIMS and founder of Share and Care Foundation graced the event as the presidium members.

Speaking at the occasion Professor N Rajmuhon Singh lauded the remarkable contributions made by Manipuri nurses in State's healthcare thereby working sincerely to provide quality services to the masses.
Further he maintained that the youths play a pivotal role in the development of the society and stressed that human capital/resource has become one of the most important resources at present.
"The main objective of this conference is to highlight the need for prioritising the mental health of healthcare providers and understanding how to balance professional and personal health", he said.
Professor H Priyosakhi Devi lauded the Society of Psychiatric Nurses Manipur for taking up measures to take special training on mental health nursing since mental health issue is a major concern of today's society. Manipuri nurses are highly sought after outside the State owing to their sincere efforts and special talents, she continued.
The RIMS Director further said that in view of the huge disparity in the ratio of doctors and patients in the country, the Minister concerned had raised the proposal for establishing good nursing colleges across the country equivalent to the medical colleges.
She also mentioned that "nurses are the backbone of the medical society" stressing that "the specially trained nurses are very reliable inspite of their less number" .
She also appealed to the nurses to take up the best possible measures to curb mental health issues.
Addressing the gathering, Dr RK Lenin Singh asserted that nursing care is of utmost importance in the treatment of patients with mental health problems apart from the role of psychiatrists.
Highlighting the role of nurses in treating patients, he said that proper treatment cannot be carried out by doctors alone without the help of the nurses.
Expressing contentment over the increasing participation of nurses in academics and research work, Dr RK Lenin maintained that the responsibility of the nurses is not only to take care of their health problems but to promote mental and general health and to raise awareness on the same.
He also emphasized on the need of imparting special training on mental health among the nursing students.
