Ukhrul, August 02 2022:
An unknown disease has killed at least 70 pigs at Phalee village under LM Block in Ukhrul.
Eleazar Raingam, chairman of Phalee village informed that the disease might have hit the area in the latter part of June.
Saying that the pigs infected by the disease showed symptoms such as loss of appetite, severe fever and fatigue, the village chairman said that the villagers rear imported Hampshire and Yorkshire breeds of pigs.
As per the village chairman, the disease might have been spread by the pigs brought from outside.
Locals in Phalee village have put a ban on slaughtering and bringing in pigs from other States to control the disease outbreak.
Eleazar stated that more than 200 pigs were vaccinated nearly three months back, but the same is not effective against the disease.
Reportedly, the Veterinary Hospital there is unable to render satisfactory services to contain the mysterious disease due to staff shortage and the same is hurting the farmers there as over 300 pigs are being reared in the village.
The locals of Phalee village urged the Veterinary Department to initiate speedy action to control the disease and ascertain the cause of swine deaths.
