Aids handed to differently-abled persons

Distribution of aids and appliances to select beneficiaries and presentation of yearly report marked the annual general assembly of Handicapped Development (HD) Foundation, Manipur held today at Manipur Press Club.
As a part of the annual congregation, one wheel-chair, three voice recorder, two hearing aids, exercise books and musical instruments were distributed to 21 differently-abled beneficiaries under the 'direct child assistance' scheme.
Presenting the annual report, HD Foundation general secretary Dr S Jasowanta Singh highlighted that in the rural pockets of the State discrimination and apathy against the differently-abled individuals persist compared to the urban areas where such indifferent attitude had declined significantly.
Expressing that grave concern that people living with physical disabilities in the rural continue to be most vulnerable to human trafficking with unscrupulous elements constantly on the prowl to take advantage of the disadvantaged section of the society, the general secretary also said that differently abled persons are often targeted for sale of human organs.
Explaining that continuous awareness campaigns are necessary to check discrimination against the differently abled people, he said HD Foundation has been taking various initiatives, including forming self help groups, to enable people with disabilities generate decent income and showcase to their peers that they too could perform different tasks like normal individuals.
Among others Foundation chairman Dr Ch Rupachandra and advisor Kh Ghanashyam also addressed the gathering.
