Imphal, June 25 2020:
AYUSH doctors and pharmacists working under NHM, Manipur today staged a sit-in protest (cease work strike) at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai Community demanding equal work and equal pay as allopathic doctors and pharmacists.
Speaking to media persons, publicity secretary of All Manipur AYUSH Doctors' Association, Khangembam Gopeshwor stated that there is a great disparity in salaries between AYUSH doctors, pharmacists working under NHM, Manipur and allopathic doctors, pharmacists.
Several memoranda have been submitted to the State Government demanding equal pay as doctors and pharmacists from both these streams work 'equally', he said adding that no positive response has been given by the Government so far.
Saying that altogether 176 AYUSH doctors and 101 pharmacists working under NHM Manipur took part in the protest, he requested the public not to misunderstand them for protesting amid the lockdown.
At one time AYUSH doctors and allopathic doctors used to receive a similar salary, but now there is a great disparity in the salary of the doctors of the two streams, Gopeshwor said and asserted that the cease work strike will continue unless the Government gives a positive response.
