Imphal East district commandos seized around 72,000 World is Yours (W/Y) tablets worth Rs 1.5 crore in the international market, from a youth at Telipati, near Kali Mandir today morning.
Briefing media persons at SP Imphal East conference hall today afternoon, Haobijam Jogeshchandra (SP Imphal East) produced and displayed the arrested individuals along with the seized WY tablets.
The SP said that as part of the no drug campaign in Imphal East district, frisking and checking operations were launched in different parts of the district.
Today morning, a team of Imphal East commandos, under the command of Subedar Y Saktishen (OC Imphal East commando), while conducting a random frisking and checking in and around Minuthong area, signalled one red Maruti Swift car (WB- 20-AG-1894) to stop for checking.
On seeing the police, the car sped away towards Telipati but the commando team gave chase and intercepted the car near Kalimai Mandir at around 11.40 am.
The driver/occupant of the car was identified as one Gandhi Kalidas Debar alias Das (29) s/o (L) Munithan Gandhi of Moreh ward number 5 and on checking the vehicle, a backpack containing 390 packets of WY tablets (each packet containing 200 tablets) was found concealed inside the vehicle.
On examination, Gandhi Kalidas revealed that tablets were handed over to him by an unknown person from Myanmar who instructed him to hand over the same to another individual at Guwahati and he also disclosed that the value of the seized tablets is worth around Rs 1.5 crore in the international market.
Further investigation is on to find other associates involved in the case and the arrested person will be handed over to Porompat PS for taking up necessary action under ND&PS Act, Haobijam Jogeshchandra said adding that the seizure of such a huge quantity of WY tablets today was possible due to the hectic efforts of the district police and district commando personnel as on the night of June 22, a Tata truck fully loaded with Indian Made Foreign Liquor, was also seized by Imphal East district police.
He then appealed to the public to extend support and co operation in the campaign launched against drugs by Imphal East district police.
