Two held on extortion charges

Additional Director of Education (S), RK Tenedy and another person, accused of carrying out extortion and having nexus with an underground outfit have been remanded to police custody today.
While RK Tenedy was remanded to 5 days police custody, the other accused person, Huidrom Manglem has been remanded to 10 days police custody by the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West.
RK Tenedy (59), of Yaiskhul Janmasthan (at present staying at Ghari Awang Leikai), was earlier taken to police remand and he was produced before the Court today after completion of the custody period.
Huidrom Manglem (57) of Wangkhei Thangjam Leikai, on the other hand, was arrested yesterday in connection with the same case.
During the hearing today, the Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP), praying for further remand, submitted that the investigation is in the initial stage and the interrogation of RK Tenedy at special cell and interrogation of all ZEOs (Zonal Educational Officers) have not been completed.
Objecting the prayer for further remand, the defense counsel submitted that RK Tenedy is suffering from hypertension, fluctuation of BP (blood pressure) and is under medication and requires more medical attention.
The defense counsel further said that RK Tenedy may be remanded to judicial custody instead of the police custody, considering his health condition.
The defense counsel of Huidrom Manglem, during the hearing, claimed that his client is a contractor by profession and the sole bread earner of his family.
He was arrested yesterday from his residence and was falsely implicated in the case, submitted the counsel and prayed for his release on bail.
The Court, after hearing the submissions, observed that RK Tenedy needs medical attention and the medical care can be given to him in police custody.
Then, the Court remanded RK Tenedy to further five more days police custody remand till April 26 to enable proper investigation of the case.
The Court also directed the Investigating Officer of the case to give RK Tenedy proper medical check-up every 48 hours or whenever needed in the police custody.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate, on the other hand, remanded Huidrom Manglem to 10 days police custody till May 1 and also directed the IO to give proper medical aid every 48 hours.
