The National Commission for Scheduled Tribe has recommended the Government of Manipur to protect the Maram tribe inhabiting Senapati district.
According to an official source, the Commission made this specific recommendation in view of the primitiveness of the Maram tribe.
On receiving the Commission's recommendation, the Tribal Affairs and Hills Department has started consultation with other departments on the special measures that can be taken up to protect the Maram tribe and their traditions.
The National Commission for Scheduled Tribe further recommended the State Government to alleviate the literacy level of tribal people, and also to make operational all the Eklavya Model Residential Schools built at Gamnom-Sapermaina, Moreh and Tamenglong.
