Imphal, October 11 2018:
Raising strong obj ection to the unprecedented mining of sand in/near rivers situated in Rongmei inhabited areas like the Aga (Ijei River), Aling (Iring river), Alang (Irang), Leimatak, Makru and Barak etc in a dissipative manner using heavy machines and earth excavators, the Rongmei Naga Youth Organization Manipur (RNYOM) has cautioned all the concerned individuals, suppliers and construction companies involving in various quarrying activities in and around the basin of rivers mentioned above to immediately halt their activities.
"These heedless mining practices has become a continuing issue which exacerbate environmental degradation beyond measure.
The Rongmei Naga Youth Organization will initiate a 'Rally for River' movement and set up a working cell to check and monitor the quarrying activities," said a statement of the president of the organisation Nicholas Gonmei.
"If the current state of mining and other activities which affect the rivers are not checked, we might see them running dry within 10 years from now" .
"Our greed today should not jeopardize the very essence of tomorrow's livelihood.
Our thoughts should be governed by the belief of the present generation's ability to meet its own needs but without compromising the needs of the future generations," said the statement.
