Agri Dept distributes winter crops & soil testing tools

Winter crops were distributed at Agriculture store at Lamphel today, through various District Agriculture Officers, under the Compensatory Crop Plan 2019, as an attempt to ease the inconveniences caused by the inability to plant crops this year due to scarcity of rainfall.
Peas, mustard seeds, wheat, Rabi maize, gram and lentils, amounting to around Rs 602.29 lakh were distributed today.
These seeds are all certified by the National Seed Corporation Ltd.

Speaking to media persons while handing over the seeds to the respective District Agriculture Officers today, Director of Agriculture Department, Laltanpuii Vanchhong said that the scarce rainfall this year resulted in many of the agricultural lands failing to grow and produce crops and the initiative has been taken up by the Agriculture Department to ease some of the suffering of the farmers and the people.
He narrated that the around 300 hectares of land were used for the process of utilising community nursery to help the farmers and added that as the Department lacked the funds, it sent a proposal to the State Government and the Government agreed to it, thus leading to the distribution of seeds to the DAOs today.
The Agri Director continued that today's seeds will be able to cover around 15,791 hectares of agricultural land in the State.
Around 50 percent of the total seeds to be distributed to the farmers, reached Manipur by October 6.The remaining seeds are arriving through Imphal-Dimapur and Imphal-Jiribam roads.
They will reach Manipur by November 10, he added.
Appealing the farmers to plant and nurture the crops properly, the Agriculture Director said that the remaining seeds will be distributed to the farmers as soon as they reach Imphal.
The seeds were distributed to the DAOs of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Chandel, Ukhrul, Tamenglong, Churachandpur, Senapati and Jiribam today.
For Soil Testing and Fertiliser Recommendation, mini soil testing laboratory tools were also distributed to the DAOs as well.
The Director then appealed to the farmers to bring their soil samples to the DAOs so as to test the condition of their soil.
Agriculture Department Soil Committee Deputy Director L Gojendra was also present in the meet.
