Imphal, July 30 2011:
PWD, which is in charge of mending NH 39 stretching from Koirengei to Mao which has been lying in a pathetic condition for a long time, should be sincere in its work, merely showing off during VIPs visits should be stopped as it would bear no fruit, exclaimed K Raina, MLA of Tadubi constituency.
Speaking to media persons, K Raina said that he had been time and again reminding the Principal Secretary, Works that the condition of NH39 from Koirengei to Mao is pathetic and urgent repairs were needed.
He had been trying to contact every engineer in the department including the Chief Engineer but unfortunately none of them were available for talks.
The landslides which occurred recently in Maram could have been avoided if the PWD engineers had put an effort and done their work more sincerely.
The stretch had been black topped this year.
Due to poor quality work and negligence in constructing the retaining wall led to the landslide, charged K Raina.
He said around ' 6 to 7 crores had been sanctioned for maintenance of the road but still no maintenance work has been taken up so far.
He had inspected the work progress in NH39 which covers 50 % of his constituency.
During his visit no PWD engineers could be found.
"How can we expect quality control when no engineers are present at the work site" .
Clarifying on the issue of a Hot Mix Plant being installed in Maram, K Raina said that he had not given any written statement on the approval of setting up one in his constituency.
"Of course the PWD Minister had over the phone mentioned about it once when he came down to Maram" he said.
All co operation have been given by the people to all development works on NH39.Local clubs have assisted the work through loading of trucks and had also supplied fuel for government trucks dues for which have still not been cleared.
And yet the Works Minister has appealed to the public to give co operation.
"What kind of co operation is needed more?" he asked.
If the government cannot maintain the national highways how can we expect it to build good roads in the interior parts of the state.
"I don't think NH 39 could be made better under such conditions but I'll give my full support to make it a good road", he said.
