Workshop on NTCP held

A district level orientation workshop on National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) implementation was conducted at SIRD Conference Hall, DC Complex, Porompat by the Chief medical Officer, Imphal East and Educational and Social Upliftment Organisation, Mantripukhri.
Dr Ravinder Kumar, MPH Technical Officer (Tobacco Control); Dr K Komolini Devi, State Nodal Officer, TCP, Directorate of Health Services and CMO of Imphal East, Dr L Ashok Sharma attended the workshop as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Komolini Devi pointed out that 54 % of Manipur population are tobacco users compared to the National average of 35 %.
Manipur is 4th in the highest tobacco users index in India.
Dr Th Somorendro Singh projected that 55 lakh people worldwide die each year due to tobacco related illness.
He said that a District Tobacco Control Committee would be constituted soon to conduct awareness campaign through local media like TVs, hoarding and to coordinate with departments like Agriculture, Social Welfare, Rural Development, Labour and other stake holders.
