Imphal, March 27 2017:
Pointing out that the induction of Jiribam MLA Ashab Uddin, a Bengali Muslim as a Parliamentary Secretary came at a time when the State Assembly is trying to pass a Bill to safeguard the indigenous people, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) observed that the silence maintained by the people over ILPS movement is not a good sign.
In a statement, DESAM expressed apprehension that a time may come when the State would fall into the hands of non-indigenous people if non-indigenous people continue to contest and win elections.
By inducting MLA Ashab Uddin as a Parliamentary Secretary, the Government has set a precedent for non-indigenous people who have been trying to establish a foothold in the State for their own sake, it said.
The student body alleged that India has been attempting to drown indigenous people of the State by adopting population transfer policy .
DESAM said it would be worthless to protect the territorial integrity and boundary of the State if the number of non-locals surpasses the population of indigenous people.
The student body expressed gratitude to all those who extended support to the 17 hours State-wide general strike called by it against the induction of MLA Ashab Uddin as one of the Parliamentary Secretaries.
Meanwhile, Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has pledged to extend full support to the agitation launched by DESAM against the elevation of Ashab Uddin as a Parliamentary Secretary.
MEELAL in a statement said such agitation launched by DESAM is a right step towards protecting indigenous people from the rampant influx and influence of non-locals in the State.
The State has witnessed the intense movement to demand a mechanism to check the influx of non-locals.
