AMUCO releases fingerlings at community ponds

The All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) and State Fisheries Department came together to release about 7000 fingerlings at 100 community ponds in the State today.
Release of the fingerlings started at Kekrupat and then continued to Ningthem Pukhri and Ima Khunthokhanbi pond amongst others.
Speaking to the media on the sideline of the programme, AMUCO president Nando Luwang said releasing fingerlings in association with the Fisheries Department was part of AMUCO's campaign to make the State self-sufficient in food production and for protection of the environment.
The programme was a part of month-long celebration of the 126th birth anniversary of Lamyanba Hijam Irabot.

As a part of the month-long celebration which started on September 1, AMUCO had already organised blood donation camp, free medical camp, social service camp and various awareness campaigns, Nando Luwang added. Releasing the fingerlings was in line with Lamyanba Hijam Irabot's vision of a healthy and a stable society, he added.
Speaking to the media, H Balakrishna, Director Fisheries Department, said the State has a large number of people who consume fish on a regular basis.
The yearly demand of fish in the State is around 56,000 metric tonnes while the State can only produce about 36,000 metric tonnes.
The State spends in crores to procure fish from outside the State, he added.
The State Fisheries Department was joining hands with AMUCO in its mission to increase fish production in the State, he added.
United Club's Organisation of Bishnupur District and Kakching District United Clubs' Organisation (KADUCO) also distributed fingerlings at various locations in their respective districts as a part of the programme.
