Imphal, January 22 2014 :
In what could be a disgrace to Manipur Police, the chargesheet copies of about 50 important criminal cases were found missing from various Police Stations in the State.
According to a highly placed source, the officers-in-charge (OCs) concerned submitted the chargesheets of those 50 cases to the prosecution, but they were returned to the Police Stations concerned for necessary rectification and updates.
The chargesheet copies reportedly went missing after the prosecution sent them back to the Police Stations.
Some of these cases are more than 30 years old, which included the sensational ambush on Inspector Lokhon and his team by some PLA cadres at Napetpalli.
Soon after assuming his office, DGP Shahid Ahmed directed ADGP (LO) LM Khaute to submit a progress report of all cases handled by the Police Stations across the State.
The ADGP then made a thorough inquiry through the IGs, DIGs and SPs of all districts.
The missing chargesheet copies came to light during the inquiry.
Enough evidences were also found to prove that the chargesheets were submitted already to the prosecution but sent back to the Police Stations concerned for necessary rectification and updates.
The chargesheet copies were discovered to be missing only after the officials checked at the Police Stations concerned.
The "disgraceful" report has indeed saddened DGP Shahid Ahmed.
He has strictly instructed the police officials to take stringent action against the IOs and OCs concerned if those missing FIR and chargesheet copies could not be discovered within a short period.
Many of the IOs and OCs concerned related to those 30-year-old cases have already retired from service, but they are most likely to be pulled for dereliction of their duties while they were in service, the source added.
So far, none of the police officials have said anything regarding the issue.
