World Poetry Day was observed at Manipur Press Club under the aegis of Sahitya Thoupang Lup today.
Gopal Sharma Award was also handed out as a part of the event.
Elangbam Dinamani Singh received the award which consisted of a cash prize of Rs 10,000, a shawl and a citation.
President of Manipur Sahitya Parishad, Th Tombi Singh and Sahitya Akademi Awardee Yumlembam Ibomcha took part in the event as the chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking at the event, Th Tombi Singh said that the event has been organised to promote poetry adding that the people and the youth seem to be interested more in films than books leading one to question if poetry has any place left in today's society.
"Nowadays, people are more focused on images rather than the written words.
Reading books help in cultivating morals and personalities.
But the present day society seem to have lost the habit of reading", he added.
