Over loaded trucks detained

Volunteers of Highway Truck Owner Welfare Organisation (HITOWO) detained 11 over loaded trucks and handed them over to Motor Vehicles Department today.
The volunteers of HITOWO detained the 11 trucks at Awang Sekmai area, along Imphal-Dimapur road, and brought them all the way to ISBT Khuman Lampak before handing them over to officials of Motor Vehicles Department.
Speaking to media persons, HITOWO general secretary L Ratan said that the association had earlier announced through media that it would be monitoring overweight/overloaded trucks and vehicles plying along the National Highways.
Informing that the association had postponed its actions due to the recent flood problem in the State as well as the June 18 occasion, Ratan said the association will begin its drive once again along National Highway 39 and 53.He informed that as per an order issued by the Transport Department on January 4, a ten wheeler truck can transport no more than 25 metric tonne (including the weight of the vehicle) along Imphal Dimapur road and no more than 24 metric tonne along Imphal-Jiribam road.
Then on June 4, Jiribam DC also issued an order regarding the weight allowed to be transported along the National Highway, he said and added that extra emphasis will be given to trucks and transport vehicles plying along Imphal-Dimapur side.
According to one junior officer of Motor Vehicles Department, the Department also conducts such drives against overweight vehicles.
If such a truck is caught for the first time, a fine of Rs 2000 will be levied and Rs 1000 will be added for each extra tonne of weight the vehicle is carrying, the officer added.
