Gender and conflict situation dissected

Imphal, December 16 2011:
A one-day seminar on gender and conflict situation was held today at Hotel Imphal under the joint aegis of the Department of Political Science, Nambol L Sanoi College and the Department of Political Science, MB College, Imphal.
Former AVRC Director Prof Arambam Lokendra, MB College Principal Dr Th Manihar Singh, and Karam Monoranjan Singh, Department of English, MB College, Imphal graced the occasion as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
The first session was chaired by Prof Arambam Lokendra.
During the session paper of Ashild Kolas, PRIO, Norway, who could not attend the seminar, titled "Gender and Conflict Situation in South Asia" was read out for the benefit of the participants.
Dr.Homen Thangjam, MB College presented a paper on "Defining Conflict Situation in Northeast India" and Dr.G Amarjit Sharma, NLS College spoke on "Everyday Life in Conflict Situation" .

The second session was chaired by Irengbam Arun Former Editor Ereipak daily.
N Edina of EEVPHAM spoke on "Plight of the widows in Manipur" and Kh Anandi, Just Peace Foundation, spoke on Irom Sharmila and AFSPA.

Sheelaramani, Reader, DM College of Arts, spoke on "Challenges faced by women of Manipur in Conflict Situation".
The third session was chaired by Nandini Thokchom, FIPA.
Thangjam Shanta of Khurai spoke on "Homosexuality and Gay Rights in Conflict situation" and Sreema Ningombam, NLS College, reflected on Homosexuality and Gay Rights and patriarchal institutions of the Manipuri society.
The last session of the seminar was chaired by Dr RK Indira Devi, Reader, MB.
College, Imphal.
Nandini Thokchom, FIPA presented a slide show on "Conflict situation and construction of gender order" and Ranjeeta Sadhokpam, Human Rights Alerts Manipur, shared her personal experiences of being a woman activist.
The seminar culminated with observatory remarks given by Salam Bidyalaxmi Devi of Mahidol University, Bangkok who was special guest of the seminar.
