Ukhrul, June 14 2013 :
The Seipaikong bridge constructed on Nungshong village river was inaugurated today by Tychicus Vashum, Project Manager UDCRMS/NERCORMP, Ukhrul.
The bridge will now shorten UkhrulKamjong Road to more than 30 km to the villages under Kamjong block.
With the repeated appeals to Government and local MLA since 1984, a temporary suspension bridge was constructed to connect with other villages but could not meet the villagers' need.
The Centre Jt Review Mission team, NERCORMP finally considered the villagers' need.
From 2011, the bridge construction was started with the funding from NERCORMP supervised by PASDO, IFAD.
The estimate cost of the bridge was about Rs 1.2 crore though the actual expenditure incurred is Rs 71.8 lakh of which 30% was from local community contribution and the rest from NERCORMP and district administration.
SDO of Ukhrul Block, Rita Leiyaphy, DLOs of the district and the villagers attended the bridge inauguration programme.
The chief guest of the programme, Vashum alleged the Government that it had failed to implement the flagship programme by being not serious in their project in spite of spending crore of rupees.
The IFAD at least takes up 2/3 programme of inauguration under this project annually.
He also made clarification about IWMP implementation in the district, that IFAD only initiates programmes in capacity building and social modification but has nothing to do with the implementation of the IWMP programme.
The villages Nungshong Khullen and Khunou and two NaRM-G partners showed their satisfaction and appreciation for construction of the bridge which is a lifeline and will really boost the economy of the villages of Kamjong area and also that their firm conviction with the IFAD cannot be compromise.
