Imphal, November 13 2014:
A two-day conference on the protection of Nambul river has kick started at the venue of the ongoing Chinjak Festival at Pishum Ningombam Leikai ground today.
Representatives from All Loktak Lake Area Fisherman's Union, Polluted Nambul River Affected Victims, Yaipha Lamjing Lup, Innovative Youth Society, Youth Club, Uripok Achom Leikai and Manipur Cycle Club attended the conference on the first day.
Speaking to reporters, Innovative Youth Society secretary Kh Athouba said that sensing the urgent need for the protection of Nambul river, this year's Chinjak Festival is held under the theme, 'Save Nambul' .
Over the years, the river has been almost reduced to a drain, choked with filth and waste material, Athouba said and added that dumping garbage and sewage directly into the river have not only defiled its beauty but also rendered its water polluted and unusable.
He said that Nambul's river bed has not been dredged for a long period of time thereby decreasing the depth of the river.
Athouba added that extreme pollution of the river in Imphal areas has severely affected the natural eco-system of the river and Loktak lake.
Manipur Cycle Club president W Ram said that there is urgent need for putting in collective effort to revive the natural state of the river.
Saying that degradation of the condition of the river poses serious threat to the lives of aquatic organisms and human health, Ram urged different organisations of the State to join hands in saving the river.
All Loktak Lake Fishermen Union secretary Oinam Rajen said that Loktak can be protected only when Nambul river is kept neat and clean.
