22nd Loktak Day observed at Loktak Lairembi ground

The 22nd Loktak Day was observed under the theme, 'Save Loktak' at Loktak Lairembi ground, Thanga today.
The clarion call of protecting the biggest fresh water lake in North East India was once again made during the observance organised by the festival committee constituted under the aegis of Loktak Lake Development Organisation.
In the morning, the ritual of welcoming Loktak Lairembi was performed at nine sacred places of the lake and worshipped by the gathering.
Painting competition, release of fingerlings, tug of war competition for women, march past competition and cultural items were the main attractions of the programme which was graced by Education Minister DD Thaisii and former Minister and Loktak Lake Development Organisation President H Sanayaima Singh as the chief guest and president respectively.
Government Chief Whip T Mangibabu, Loktak Development Authority Project Director Th Ibobi, K Pro Infra Works Pvt Ltd General Manager D Balaji and retired Reader of DMC Science Dr Kh Samungou were also present as guests of honour.
Giving keynote address, festival organising committee Convenor Meghachandra Mangangcha said, the committee has been observing the day with consultations with different experts since 1990 with an aim to protect the lake.
As the size of the lake is decreasing day by day, Meghachandra said, the lake which has an area of 236.21 sq km and depth of 2.03 m, may become parched one day if necessary measures are not taken up in time.
He further said that the lake, which is also home for many plants and animals including endangered Sangai, plays significant part in maintaining ecological balance of the State.
On the otherhand, Loktak Hydro Electric Project and Loktak Protection Act gives hardships to a large number of people who are dependant on the lake for their livelihood.
Speaking at the occasion, Minister DD Thaisii informed the gathering that the State Government is planning to promote water sports at the lake.
Maintaining that Loktak Lake is the soul of Manipur, the Minister said that every Manipuri must put in effort to save the lake.
MLA T Mangibabu while speaking at the function pointed out that Loktak Protection Committee Act needs amendment on some points as people are against these points.
He also promised to make it a poll issue in the coming Assembly elections.
