Imphal, June 12 2020:
Committee Against Delimitation on Census-2001, Moirang has appealed to all concerned not to conduct delimitation based on 2001 census report.
A press release signed by the convenor of the committee, M Somorjit Singh stated that carrying out the delimitation on the erroneous census report of 2001 may trigger tension in the entire State.
Though increasing the Assembly seats of hills will not be an issue, the number of valley ACs should not be compromised at any cost, he said and opined that the proposed delimitation process should be conducted based on scientific census report which is acceptable to all.
Committee Against Delimitation on Census-2001, Moirang was formed on May 31 last during a meeting of political parties and CSOs based in Moirang AC.
He further appealed to all concerned to consider the significance of Moirang with the State literature and history while carrying out the proposed delimitation in future.
Suggesting that an apex body should be formed to stand unitedly against the proposed delimitation based on 'faulty' census report, Somorjit asked the Delimitation Committee to conduct delimitation of Manipur in 2026 based on 2021 census report.
He also recalled that the delimitation process was put on hold after all political parties of Manipur complained about the proposal to conduct delimitation based on the 'controversial' 2001 census report in 2008 .
It may be mentioned that five MLAs-Konthoujam Govindas (INC), Samuel Jendai Kamei (BJP), Yengkhom Surchandra Singh (INC), V Valte (BJP) and Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh (BJP) were appointed as the associate members of delimitation commission on May 26.Asking if the appointed associate members have given their consent to conduct delimitation based on 2001 census report, Somorjit Singh urged them to comprehend the sensitivity of the issue and the sentiment of the public as responsible leaders.
Somorjit also asked the commission members to state their stand on the issue.
