Imphal, January 11 2016:
Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) is all set to organise a public meeting on January 17 to mark the completion of three years of its movement here at THAU Ground.
The committee has got strong and consistent public support during its movement demanding inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe category in the past three years, STDCM president Dr Y Mohendro told journalists at Manipur Press Club today.
Dr Mohendro said the committee will continue with its struggle with public support to get its objective and demand realised.
He said the principal aim of the committee is to bring about equality, peace and harmony and unity in the present society without impinging upon the rights of existing tribal communities.
The Meitei, the major community of Manipur, was counted as Scheduled Tribe category as per the census records of 1891, 1901, and 1931 .
However, this community was removed from the ST category from the official gazette of 1951 .
